Welcome to the

Poppleton Solar Farm Project Website

Proposal for a solar farm at New Farm

We are developing proposals for a solar farm to the northwest of the village of Poppleton, in York. The site is currently used as agricultural land, and its development as a solar farm will be a major step towards a sustainable future for York, generating clean energy to power homes and businesses.

Who is the developer?

This project is being developed by Ampyr Solar Europe, a major new European solar enterprise with a combined pipeline of over 6GW of large-scale ground-mounted and rooftop solar projects in the UK, Germany and the Netherlands. The team consists of over 60 experienced renewable energy professionals.

For this project, we have created a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) called Poppleton Solar Limited. SPVs are often used for solar developments and operate as separate legal entitles, which help attract investment. This SPV brings together highly experienced partners to help accelerate the transition to a zero-carbon future.

We anticipate that the project will be able to supply enough energy to power approximately 12,400 homes per year.

The clean energy generated could save up to 12,900 tonnes of CO2 per year, which adds up to just over 386,000 tonnes of CO2 over the next 30 years.

We are exploring options for supplying cheap power to major local power users.

Biodiversity is important to us and we are exploring opportunities for creating new habitats and supporting woodland planting for the York Community Woodland project.

Supports City of York Council’s net zero ambitions.

Community consultation

We held a public consultation on our proposals from 4 July to 28 July 2023.

You can still view our consultation information boards to find out more about the project. You can also find copies of supporting plans on the Project Information page, as well as more information on the next steps for the project.

We will provide an update on the responses to the consultation on this website later this year.

We held a public consultation on our proposals from 4 to 28 July 2023. You can still view our consultation information boards, and find out more about the proposals on the Project information page. Information on how the design has changed since consultation, and key themes in the feedback received, can also be found on the Project update page.

Following the consultation, a planning application was submitted to City of York Council on 5 December 2023 to seek approval for Poppleton Solar Farm. Ampyr Solar Europe is a highly experienced developer and operator of solar and battery storage projects.

This project represents one of 10 renewable energy projects being developed across the UK by Ampyr Solar Europe, representing a pipeline of over 250 megawatts of energy generation. The continued demand for low-carbon electricity generation has been key to attracting this investment.
